Cherishing the Moment.

I smile at the little feet walking past.
Baby feet.
Little feet.
Happy feet -plodding through the grass.
White lace sandals with pink bows.
Careless, and
free.
Tumbles.
A tear.
But no stopping.
I scoop up the bundle of joy, and carry her into the house.
I forget the scene.

Princess hats.
Mommy’s clunky heels.
Old blue satin fabric turned
Into masterpieces.
Laughter echoes.
High-heels trip and
Tangle.
Her highness pours
The tea.
Originals hang on the refrigerator
Door.
Attempts of curling hair
Around one’s finger.
Nearly over.

Bare-foot days.
The feet scramble through the water-bed.
Slipping on stones.
Wet feet.
Splashing droplets.
When the sun glimpses through, they look like
Diamonds.
Laughter fills the air.
Skipping feet.
Excited toes.
A memory flashes past
And as quickly fades
Away.

On the edge of my seat
For nervousness.
Ballet shoes scuttle across the stage.
First performance.
Expert routine.
Curtains fall.
Greeted afterwards with hugs.
“Did you see me?”
Graceful gestures.
Tippy-toes.
Off to sachet with friends.
All on her own.

A tear trickles down a freckled
cheek.
One sneaker off.
A scraped knee.
Tangled bicycle spokes.
Can she do it?
Perseverant feet.
The shoe goes back on.
Determination furrows a face.
Pedals spin as she careens
Onto the street
To try again
With Success.

Pink and orange paisley flats
Worn everywhere.
Trees.
Pools.
Gardens.
Roads.
School.
Filled with holes and
mud-stained.
Trying them on
Once more,
The reluctant sets them atop a
Garbage lid.
Her toes wiggle through the holes.
Sadness.
Silence.
Becoming a young lady.

High heels for prom.
Dresses swish.
Looking like a butterfly.
Tapping feet sparkle.
Smiles gleam.
A favorite tune is played.
Dancing the night away,
Just like the first night with
Ballet shoes on a stage.
She is watched.
Joys.
Happiness.
Excitement.
Thoughts of white and pink
lace shoes flash before me
and
disappear.

Blue caps fly.
Steady feet in simple sandals.
Tears.
Bittersweet moments.
A leap- a dive.
Softly curling hair.
Exasperated with brothers for
Drinking all the
Lemonade.
Pictures.
Of today.
And of her not even
Fitting clunky princess heels
Still in the closet.

Black leather flats.
Sophisticated-looking.
Stylish.
Roses for Valentine’s Day.
Diamonds on her finger
As she dances through
The door way.
Wedding plans.
Twirling feet.
Waltz practice with
Her dad.

White lace.
Bedecked in lavender satin.
Yellow roses.
And brown leather cowboy boots-
Who would’ve thought.
Smiles, and
Tears.
Soft music.
Happy feet.
Delicious scents drift
Throughout the room.
Dances.
A first kiss.
A new step.
Clicks of a camera shutter.
She tears up,
Too.
“Do you think I can do this?”
I know she can.

Tennis shoes bedeck
Her feet.
As she watches with a camera.
A little girl-
She smiles at the little feet walking past.
Baby feet.
Little feet.
Happy feet  -plodding through the grass.
White lace sandals with pink bows.
Careless, and
free.
Tumbles.
A tear.
But no stopping.
She scoops up the bundle of joy, and carries her into the house.
I remember the scene.
