Mary Johnston
Thought you might like to read my outline biography presentation on an American author, Mary Johnston. It's a powerpoint project for my classes with Williamsburg Academy- but it's not turned in yet~ so let me know what you think! (Complete with pictures, etc.)
Mary Johnston was born in 1870 in the town of Buchanan, West Virginia into a family as the oldest of six children. Her father was Major John William Johnston, who served with Stonewall Jackson during the Civil War.
She had a strong Scotch- Irish heritage, and published twenty more novels between 1900 and 1934, the other two published novels being her main means of income.
In 1911, Mary Johnston bought property near Germantown, VA. She and her sisters began building a house they called “Three Hills,” where she lived for the rest of her life. She died there of cancer in 1936. She was sixty-six years old.
Many of Johnston’s writings were inspired by Stonewall Jackson, whom her father served with during the Civil War. She was a Christian author, writing from a Christian worldview, but several times her works
reflected more of a fantalistic view. They provided excellent insight into early American history.
One of the most well-known novels by Mary Johnston is To Have and To Hold (1900). I myself am not a big fan of romance, but I love the romance from a Christian perspective. In fact, this novel was the very first romantic bestseller (And one of my favorite books, too~).
Another writing is The Long Roll. The Long Roll was out of print, But has recently been re-issued. It’s an early-20th-century novel about the Civil War. Actually, many of her works were based on her father’s experience there as a Major. With so much at stake in our country because of our history, it’s great to see people re-printing such historical recounts in novels.
