When the Conversation is On Life Support
We've all been there - stuck in a conversation that's on life support, desperately trying to keep it alive with awkward small talk or forced nods. It's like watching a bad rom-com, but instead of a happy ending, you're praying for a graceful exit. But…reviving a dying conversation isn't as impossible as it seems. Here are my (somewhat) tried & true (for the most part) tricks to help revive a conversation into what it could be.
1. Change the Subject
Sometimes, the topic just isn't engaging. Introduce something new or interesting that aligns with shared interests.
“By the way, have you heard about [insert relevant topic}?”
For the love of all things beautiful, stay away from politics.
2. Ask Open-Ended Questions
Shift to more engaging questions that require thoughtful answers, rather than simple "yes" or "no" responses.
“What’s something exciting you’ve been working on lately?”
3. Share a Personal Story
Opening up with a brief personal story or even joke can spark new topics and encourage the other person to do the same.
“This reminds me of the time when I...”
4. Find Common Ground
Pivot the conversation to topics of mutual interest or shared experiences.
“We both love [reading, writing, oysters, the list is endless], have you been doing anything related to that recently?”
5. Offer Thoughtful Compliments
Compliments can shift the tone of a conversation and bring a fresh energy.
“I really admire the way you [fill in the blank].”
6. Use Humor
Light humor can defuse tension and bring the conversation back to life. Be mindful of the context and make sure it’s appropriate.
“Man, we’re really good at talking about nothing, aren’t we?”
7. Acknowledge the Lull
If the conversation is really struggling, acknowledging it can sometimes break the ice.
“Welp, we’ve run out of things to talk about, haven’t we? What’s been on your mind lately?”
8. Offer a Fresh Perspective
Bring in something thought-provoking or ask for their opinion on a topic that might interest them.
“What are your thoughts on _______?”
Key: make sure you actually have some thoughts on said topic. ;)
By using any of these tactics, you can breathe life back into the conversation, making it more engaging for both sides. Let me know if these work, or what your ideas on.
