Summer Afternoons
“Try this ancient remedy: when you are tired, rest.” -Jaiya John
I’m learning this yet again. If you get tired, learn to rest. Not to quit, rest.
So many times we go through life without taking the time to dwell in that moment, just sitting there, and we miss out (I’m talking to me). In this season, I’m traveling back and forth to two places near and dear to my heart every five days. Some weeks it’s mundane and I feel like it’s just not worth it. Other weeks I remember it’s just for a season and I’m going to miss it when it ends. But time has flown so quickly. The two days I’m in the desert, it’s so bustling with my work schedule I feel as if I barely have time to breathe. The last five days I’m in my own place, I have much more time to get the things done that I need to - rest included.
My soul has time to take a few extra moments of peace in the mornings. My work here is to get a few papers written, to blog and write, to shoot and chase down jobs and read over scripts. Some nights I have some cheese and toast and tomatoes and a glass of wine for dinner and call it a night. Other days I spend an hour or two concocting a new recipe.
And I love both sides of it. It’s learning to take those rest periods as you’re given them, and treating life like it’s a gift.
