Twenty Lessons for a Twenty-Year-Old Human Becoming. Part Two
To continue from yesterday's post, ten more things I've learned in the last year or so (and will more than likely be learning through the ages). What would you add?
11. Coffee isn't the best thing for you
. I was actually kind of devastated when I figured this out. After trying multiple ways around it, I resolved to drink tea instead. And that's o.k. Moderation in everything is better, though.
13. Sometimes you follow the recipes. Sometimes you don't.
I mean that both figuratively and literally of course. And of course, I teach from
disastrous
experience. A little more (or less) pepper in the world is always an interesting experiment. Sometimes it’s perfectly acceptable to eat dessert first (or eat with your fingers) to mix it up. Just to get out of a day-to-day routine.
14. Learn how to laugh at yourself.
The world, I promise, is not going to stop if you make a mistake or say something totally rash. People do not go pass through their days with their mind and / or eyes fixated on you. Nobody, no matter how hard they try or pretend they are, is really perfect or real when they are feeling perfect. Experience being your not-so-perfect self, because that brings joy to people. Real people are far more interesting to fixate your mind and eyes on anyway.
I kid.
But anyway. To quote Garance Dore, "Nobody perfect is cool, and nobody cool is perfect."
15. Keep it in the family
. Some things are just not meant to be spread outside of those close few within your family. And if you say your family is not close enough to keep those things..well, close.. keep it within the ears of your adopted sister or brother. Just with someone who you trust with your life. And a handful of those in your lifetime is a blessing.
16. You will never have enough notebooks
. At least if you're me, you will never have enough notebooks. I collect those things like some girls collect shoes, and I feel lucky when I find a spare one hanging around my room or tucked into said pair of shoes. And while you're at it, make sure to have a gaggle of pens.
17.
It's not worth doing if it's making you unhappy.
I'm not saying life is all about sunshine and rainbows, and I've definitely done enough to know what makes me happy does not all the time pay the bills. What I'm saying is, if you're struggling with your everyday job, do it now, but don't do it for the rest of your life. Quit while you can, you're young enough to, and you can find someone else who understands that you can learn. Or, do what you love, and find out a way to make that work absolutely can't-live-without for the rest of the world. Be an entrepreneur.
18. God is always good. Have hope
. Be open to today. Because what comes, whether bad or not-so-bad, is going to be good for those who love Him.
19. Loving well is worth it.
It is. Love all, but guard your heart enough while becoming vulnerable to those trustworthy few. It's so trite, so simple, but sometimes it's not so easy. Love as Jesus loved.
20. How you spend your day is how you spend your life. - Dillard.
Live today. Live generously, instead of waiting for that
one day because oh my gosh today is the dayyy
. Live in moderation. And yes, do look forward to that day, but spend your life as you're supposed to in preparation for that day. You'll love it that much more.
